Description
As many as 300,000 people are believed to have lost their lives since the conflict in Darfur, Sudan erupted in February 2003. Systematic human rights abuses have occurred by all parties involved in the conflict, but primarily by the Sudanese government-backed Janjaweed militia. Over 2,000,000 civilians have been displaced by the conflict. The conflict in Darfur has witnessed some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and wide-scale ethnic cleansing, murder, rape, torture, and enslavement.

"Yesterday my village was burned" comprises photographs taken of the land and Darfurian refugees in Darfur and Chad. Amnesty International, Oxfam International, and independent photographers shot the photographs. Amnesty International compiled the photo essay.
