Uhuru Health Fest and Flea Market is a project of the African People’s Education and Defense Fund building health, self-determination and sustainable economic development projects by and for the African community (more info at www.apedf.org and uhurufurniturephilly.blogspot.com).
Our goal is to involve members of the community like you in harnessing skills, resources, information and volunteers to build this event and future health programs that will address the ever-deepening health and economic crisis faced by the African community.
In Philadelphia 40% of the black community lives in poverty; it has the second highest rate of hunger in U.S. cities and one of the highest rate of child hunger; over 50% of black men and young people are unemployed and deal with daily police containment and discriminatory prison policies. The city of Phila. Is closing schools 23 schools this year—all in impoverished black communities.
The stress of these dire conditions combined with the lack of quality health care and affordable community health options creates a formidable barrier to the health and well-being of the African community that has been historically ignored and perpetuated by the City of Philadelphia.
This is your chance to play a part in changing these conditions. APEDF is committed to building community based solutions that have a lasting positive impact and continually build towards a vision of self-reliance in the African community. There is room for everyone to participate!
We Need YOU to PARTICIPATE:
• Endorse Health Uprising – help spread the word through your base
• Sponsor Health Uprising– make a donation or take out an ad in the souvenir booklet
• Participate in the program.
• Provide health services
• Volunteer or organize volunteers to build the health fair and on the day
