Last summer, the national media was consumed with talk about budget shortfalls, the failure of unions to stop ant-union legislation across the Midwest, and the dominance of the Tea Party. Now the country is focused on the rise on income inequality, the victories in Ohio and Illinois, and the return of Occupy Wall Street.
What can we do to ensure this new spirit leads to concrete victories that put power back in the hands of ordinary people? How can we fight effectively for the future of our generation, and the ones behind us?
Come to the YDS summer conference to discuss these questions, learn new activism skills, help set YDS’s 2012-13 Activist Agenda, and hang out with activists from around the country.
We have seen activism by young people play a critical role in struggles all over world. Here in the U.S. students are the targets for austerity programs that increase the costs of higher education and reduce the quality of education in public schools. In response, young people have organized walk outs, speak outs and countless demonstrations against the budget cuts and they are standing with workers as Republican governors try to destroy unions and eliminate collective bargaining for public employees.
On August 9th-12th the Young Democratic Socialists will hold its annual summer conference at the Valley Brook Inn in upstate New York. The conference will focus on organizing skills that students can use next year to continue to build the socialist movement. YDS members will also vote on the new national leadership, national campaigns, and our two year strategic plan.
The conference is always a great time. This year we will be focusing on concrete organizing skills that you can take back to your chapter like canvassing, leadership development, and campaign planning. The conference also allows you to hang out with your comrades, swim, play basketball, and hang around the campfire.
