Nonviolent Atonement: A New Look at the Cross of Christ in a World of Violence
The death of Jesus is central to Christian life and thought yet has been frequently been misunderstood and misused. In many tragic ways, the cross of Christ has been seen as a kind of “redemptive violence,” and has been directly or indirectly used to vindicate and even bless human violence. Recent work on the atonement (the death of Jesus) provides us with new solutions to discern the crucial relationship between Jesus' death and nonviolence, discipleship and Christian theology in the 21st century. This session will review the powerful ways the death of Jesus affects our understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live.
This program will be facilitated by Michael Hardin, Executive Director of Preaching Peace (www.preachingpeace.org), a network of clergy and theologians whose goal is to educate the Church in Jesus' vision of peace.
A light breakfast will be served. A $10 donation is requested to cover costs (though if you can’t pay, please feel free to come anyway!).
