608-256-8662University of Wisconsin-Madison, in conjunction with student group Stop the War!, is hosting a Midwest Youth Activist Conference from Oct. 3rd to Oct. 5th. Free housing will be provided. The conference will address a variety of progressive concerns including, but not limited to civil liberties violations, corporate media, the war and occupation of Iraq, history of activism (personal experiences and lessons from 60s activists), activism 101, Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the war on drugs, the military-industrial complex, a history of U.S. imperialism, a history of U.S. occupations, popular progressive pedagogy, veterans' stories, the prison-industrial complex, environmental assaults by corporate America, affirmative action, gay rights and issues of globalization. What can we as students do to affect these issues?
This conference would be a great opportunity to network and for a progressive alliance/structure among midwest schools. The conference will be followed on Sunday by a call for a demonstration against the occupation of Iraq.
The tentative schedule is as follows (this is tentative, but just to give everyone a rough outline):
Friday, October 3rd: 5-7 pm: registration and housing assignments
7:30 p.m.: keynote speaker (t.b.a.)
9:00 p.m. - whenever: party, opportunity for students from different universities to meet and network
Saturday, October 4th: 10-11:30 a.m.: 1st workshop (there will be between 3 and 5 workshops that participants can choose from)
11:30-12:30: lunch
1:00-2:30: 2nd workshop
3:00-4:30: 3rd workshop
4:30-6:00: dinner
6:00-7:30: 4th workshop
8:00: panel discussion
9:30: movies, live music and party
Sunday, Oct. 5th:
10:00 - 11:30: 1st workshop
12:00: rally against the occupation!
Currently, we do not plan on charging a registration fee, however it is the job of each campus to organize transportation and any other needs that arise. If someone has a disability which needs to be accomodated for, please e-mail.
