United StatesThere's a great US and Canada Zero Waste Communities Conference coming up in Detroit, MI, from February 6-9th. Detroit is home to the world's largest trash incinerator and they are close to finally getting it closed.
While the conference is mostly about landfilling and incineration of trash (and the "zero waste" alternative strategy), there is a lot of content that crosses over into the issues you're all dealing with, whether it be burning coal, tires, biomass or poultry waste... or turning these various things into burnable transportation fuels.

*Purpose: The purpose of this conference is to strengthen movements in the US and Canada for just and sustainable alternatives to waste incinerators and landfills. Join amazing activists from across the U.S. and Canada to work for jobs, health and justice, and against harmful incinerators and landfills. The conference will be hosted by the Coalition for a New Business Model for Detroit Solid Waste. Twenty-two organizations (listed below) have come together as conference partners to collaboratively make this conference a success.

Due to limited space at the conference, we encourage you to register soon. The conference will begin with a welcome reception on February 6 at 7pm and end on February 9 at 4pm after an action/event coordinated by the local Detroit groups.
*Conference costs: Registration is $75. It is our goal to not turn people away due to lack of funds, so don't let this be an excuse not to come! The accommodation costs for the event at a hotel in Downtown Detroit is $110 a night for a room with two double beds. For individuals willing to share a room with another person, the total accommodation cost for the three nights (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) would be ~$165 + tax.
*Scholarships: We will offer a limited number of scholarships to help cover conference expenses for individuals based on the criteria agreed upon by the conference partners. The criteria includes: Economic need; racial, class, gender, and other diversity; geographic and organizational representation; and commitment to the issues.
