Creating a just and sustainable energy future is our generation’s greatest challenge. This February 8th-10th, 2008 at Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Georgia we will continue to train to next generations leaders to meet this challenge.
The SSREC began in 2004, co-hosted by the University of North Carolina, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. Since then, it has been hosted by schools in Tennessee and South Carolina. Last year, over 300 university students joined us from 10 states and over 40 institutions across the Southeast. In planning for its monumental 5th year the SSREC has broadened its scope to build an inclusive movement in the southeast encouraging diversity in all forms. We are excited to announce our new partnership with the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative, as well as tracks that reach beyond campuses. These include Environmental Justice and Anti-oppression, Community, High School, and Faculty tracks. These changes represent the values within the youth climate movement and the realization of the need for our movement to go beyond that of past environmental movements, to build a truly inclusive energy future that will provide for all people.
This year's conference includes 3 days of speakers, panels, and workshops that will address the issues of energy, climate change, and environmental justice. Throughout the weekend all participants will be introduced to these topics and attend hands on workshops that will empower them to return to their communities and campuses ready to implement the changes necessary to build a just and sustainable energy future. Conference speakers include inspiring leaders from throughout the southeast who's work is making this future a reality.
Please join us for the 5th annual Southeast Student Renewable Energy Conference February 8-10, 2008 at Valdosta State University. The future is ours, let’s change it.
Sincerely,
The SSREC conference planning committee
