United StatesPhyllis Bennis is a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) in Washington D.C. and of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. She has been a writer, analyst and activist on Middle East and UN issues for many years. While working as a journalist at the United Nations during the run-up to the 1990-1991 Gulf War, she began working on the U.S. relationship to the UN, and stayed involved in work on Iraq sanctions and disarmament, and later U.S. war and occupation in Iraq. In 1999, Phyllis accompanied a group of congressional aides to Iraq to examine the impact of U.S.-led economic sanctions on humanitarian conditions there. Bennis' message challenges the drive towards U.S. empire in the Middle East and beyond. She emphasizes the need to end the U.S. occupation of Iraq and the Israeil occupation of the West Bank and Gaza. She publishes regularly and has appeared recently on the McNeil Lehrer News Hour and other broadcasts.
Bennis' recent publications include Challenging Empire: How People, Governments and the UN Defy US Power, (2005); and Understanding the Palestinian Israeli Conflict: A Primer, (Interlink, March 2007.)
Dr. Peter Dula has a PhD in theology and ethics from Duke University, and teaches in the Bible and religion department at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA. He was Iraq Program Coordinator for Mennonite Central Committee from 2004–2006.
