When Patrice Lumumba was elected president of Congo in 1960 he made it clear that Congo’s resources must benefit African people themselves.
Lumumba’s courageous, anti-colonial stand threatened U.S. & Belgian’s vast diamond interests in Congo, which had a third of the world’s known diamond supply. The CIA and Belgian imperialists assassinated Lumumba in January 1961, installing their puppet Mobutu.
