Starting Date: 09-14-2006 Los Angeles, California United States ABOUT THE GATHERING
To commemorate our 10-year anniversary, NAPAWF is planning a three-day gathering that will bring together Asian Pacific American (APA) women and allies from across the country to recognize our community activists, learn more about issues we face and shape a national action agenda.
In 1996, following the U.N. World Conference on Women in 1995 in Beijing, China, over 150 APA women met in Los Angeles to create a national organization to address the concerns and increase the rights of APA women and girls. NAPAWF is the country’s only national, multi-issue APA women’s advocacy organization.
Ten years later, NAPAWF returns to Los Angeles with “Advancing APA Women’s Rights: A Decade of Building Power, Justice & Community” – to continue and celebrate the many years of hard work, passion and determination by APA women!
* Thursday, September 14th: Membership Meeting
Opening with our fifth national membership meeting, the gathering will convene NAPAWF members to discuss and set priorities for NAPAWF’s national agenda for action; share chapter projects, advocacy efforts and membership development strategies; and gain skills and knowledge via intensive advocacy training. Even if you have not been an active member but would like to become more involved, we encourage you to attend the membership meeting to participate in trainings and learn about the exciting activities and advocacy efforts taking place across the country. For more details, please see the membership meeting schedule.
* Friday, September 15th: In-depth Advocacy Sessions
Participants will engage with panels of experts to create and recommend policy and community-action strategies on one of four key issues impacting APA women: human trafficking, ending violence against women, immigrant rights and reproductive justice. Participants will be asked to choose one of four rubrics and remain in the rubric for the entire day. Both experts in the field and those new to the area are encouraged to attend. The rubrics are an opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of the issue from an APA women’s perspective; learn about the more nuanced challenges and discussion in the field; have ample time for meaningful discussion and input from participants; and provide ideas and strategies for how to move our advocacy work forward. For more details, please see the conference schedule.
* Saturday, September 16th: Workshops
On Saturday, a variety of workshops, films, panel discussions and trainings will emphasize the broad range of issues impacting APA women – and opportunities for action. Workshops will range from improving our skills as advocates and organizers and engaging in talk story around identity to leading a more balanced life as an activist and watching compelling films on community activists. Workshops will be presented by individuals who have submitted workshop proposals. For more details, please see the conference schedule.
Saturday, September 16th Dinner and Awards Celebration
NAPAWF will host its first Fierce Sisters Dinner and Awards Celebration. The program will recognize the amazing contributions of individuals and groups who have committed their time and energy to the struggles of the APA women’s community, as well as commemorate intergenerational activism. It will be an opportunity for us to honor the women in our lives who have greatly influenced our activism and commitment to social justice. There will be a silent auction before the dinner to support our fundraising efforts.
Your sponsorship and attendance at the Anniversary Dinner and Awards Celebration will contribute to NAPAWF’s mission. Your sponsorship will also support travel scholarships for those who cannot otherwise attend our trainings and gatherings.
