United StatesAs part of its inaugural launch, the new Journal for the Study of Radicalism announces the first major North American academic conference on radicalism. It will take place at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan from January 25-27, 2007. The aims of this conference are to explore the multiple forms of contemporary and historical radicalism in a transnational context. Keynote speakers include Michael Barkun, Syracuse University, author of the Culture of Conspiracy: Apocalyptic Visions in Contemporary America, and Frank Furedi, University of Kent, author of Politics of Fear: Beyond Left and Rights. We welcome submissions from all relevant disciplinary or interdisciplinary approaches. Paper and panel topics will be wide-ranging, and may include radicalism and the media, violence and terrorism, religious radicalism, anarchism, environmentalist and ecological radicalism, technology and anti-technology, protest art and music, sexual radicalism, indigenous radicalism, anti-imperialism, "third way" political movements, corporations and radicalism, militias, pacificism, right-wing movements, and anti-radicalism.
Please send abstracts/proposals to radicalismconf07@gmail.com no later than 31 October 2006. Send your one-page abstract in an email, as well as in an attachment in Word with a .doc suffix, and please do note your institutional affiliation and position.
