Job placement upon graduation

The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute (O.I.) is a paid job training and placement program for people who know what side they are on and are ready to help workers fight back. We offer a three-step program that is a combination of classroom training, field training, and job placement. Participants earn $500/week and receive health benefits during the training. Upon successful completion of the OI training, graduates are placed with affiliate unions in organizing jobs starting between $30-$40,000/year with great benefits.

Are you interested in a career working for Social Justice?

The AFL-CIO Organizing Institute is looking for people who have experience or an interest in working for social and economic justice. The Organizing Institute is a paid job training and placement program for people who want to make a difference by working as a union organizer. We are looking for motivated people with a passion for fighting for civil and economic rights.

This is how the Organizing Institute works:

First, there is a 3-day intensive classroom training that uses case scenarios, role-plays, and discussion to teach folks what it is like to be a union organizer, how campaigns are run, and why unions are so important to workers. Applicants must be accepted to the classroom training following a phone interview, then participate in the classroom training and, if selected, will be placed into the field training.

Classroom Training
The 3-day training gives an intensive look at the work of a union organizer. Participants learn one-on-one communication skills, campaign and strategic planning. Trainers assess participant
skills and make appropriate recommendations. Housing and meals are provided.

Field Training
Selected applicants participate in paid field training and work on an organizing drive with a union. There, they apply learned union-skills first-hand. Trainees gain more responsibility and experience as their skills develop and the campaign develops. The OI provides 3-months of training and mentoring to new organizers in the field. This will help transition trainees into their new career. The OI provides the highest standards of organizer training, mentorship and development for all participants during the Classroom and Field Training program.

Job Placement
Trainees who successfully complete the program are hired as organizers by local/national unions. Annual starting salaries range from $30,000-$40,000, plus excellent benefits.

If you would like to apply to the Organizing Institute please send a resume to amarsall@aflcio.org or apply online at www.organize.aflcio.org.
