STOP RACIST KREWE OF CHASCO FLOAT
AMERICAN INDIAN MOVEMENT PROTEST
SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2007

Stop the racism shown towards the American Indians. After more than five hundred years of insults, massacres, land grabbing, mockery, and continued violations of Indian sacred rituals and religion, you'd think enough was enough. Not so for the white men/women of the Krewe of Chasco. Their perpetuation of this mockery goes on to this day. Krewe members paint their faces, dress ”Indian,” whoop and holler and incite the crowd to more ridiculous behavior. Dressing in Black Face or Red Face is wrong. Prancing around in their costumes is a blasphemy to Native Americans spiritually as it would be if they dressed in Christian robes and danced around with a crucifix.

People ask, “Don’t you have more important issues?” True, Native People have other pressing issues but this issue IS important. Racism and negative stereotyping affects the self-esteem our youth the hardest. Studies have shown that Native People have the highest suicide rate of any ethnic group.

Racism hurts. Stereotyping in any form is wrong. The Krewe of Chasco should not only be an embarrassment to New Port Richey but to the entire State of Florida. Demeaning Native American culture for fun and games is not only ethically wrong - it is morally wrong.

Join us at the staging site between 11:00-11:30, on Saturday, March 24, 2007, in the parking lot of Lowes, corner of Little Road and Ridge, New Port Richey. We will be carpooling to the parade.
